N2 - In the Brazilian semi-arid zone, desertification is a serious environmental problem. Thus, the plans for its mitigation instituted education as a social intervention tool in the affected areas. However, these actions have not been effective. This work aimed to evaluate the knowledge of desertification in a basic education school of Seridó Potiguar, to characterize their conceptual representation among students, the relation with human actions and the strategies of environmental education on the question. A semi-structured questionnaire approaching conceptual, contextual and causal aspects of desertification praised by educational standards was used. The preliminary evidences point to the fragility of the knowledge about the desertification and its social and environmental correlations, which can be improved from the creation of a effective policy of environmental education in the school.
