THE IMPACTS OF WIND FARMS ON THE LIVELIHOODS OF THE INDIGENOUS TREMEMBÉ DA BARRA DO MUNDAÚ, BETWEEN 2014 AND 2020
Abstract
The arrival of wind farms in Brazil occurred mainly in the coastal region of the northeast of the country. Although these areas have high wind potential, they are inhabited by traditional communities. In this context, the Tremembé da Barra do Mundaú have been affected by the arrival of two wind farms. This study sought to understand how the livelihoods of indigenous people have been affected by the implementation of these parks. To achieve the objective, interviews were conducted with experts and indigenous people, through the livelihoods approach. It was confirmed that the territory has lost biodiversity, mainly caused by the reduction of local water supply, affecting the livelihoods of the indigenous people. However, communities have demonstrated resilience by deploying new livelihood strategies. This study highlights the importance of considering the social and environmental impacts of energy projects to promote policies that protect indigenous rights.
